So much gratitude for the help with a huge weight that is on our shoulders...
Things haven’t been easy for the members of the Campbell River Seniors’ Centre this summer.
It’s been tough and continues to be an emotional challenge for reasons that are very close to our hearts.
On top of that heartbreak, other issues have surfaced that have had to be addressed with as much care and attention as possible while our Board and members have worked together to “right the ship” following a very serious accident that took our wonderful Past President and Special Events Chair, Dot, away from the Senior Centre and in the hospital for a very long time followed by the sudden passing and loss of our beloved President, Georgia.
And then came some huge mechanical bad news.
Our commercial dishwasher, the noisy beast we have a love/hate relationship with and have repaired many times, gave its last wheezing gasp and stopped working. No repair was possible.
We were upset. There’s no doubt about that.
But these commercial dishwashers are not a luxury in our kitchen. They are a necessity.
The Seniors’ Centre is not rich and being rich has never been our goal.
We exist because we provide something important to seniors in our community.
When we received a replacement quote of approximately $17,000, it was HUGE for us.
So, since sitting on our senior butts is definitely not our style, we immediately went into action.
We planned a food-based fundraiser for August 29th, and we called a Special General Meeting on August 27th so our members could consider releasing some of our precious rainy-day funds toward the purchase.
Don’t get us wrong, we don’t have a lot of those funds.
As we’ve said before, the purpose of the Seniors’ Centre is not to be rich. Our purpose is to serve seniors.
Plan A - We immediately planned another fundraiser and posted flyers publicly about our August 29th Barbecue & Bake Sale followed by Plan B - we called a Special General Meeting of our Members.
Then some conversations began with caring people in our community who clearly understood the financial burden this unexpected expense placed on our Seniors’ Centre.
Questions were asked. Information was provided. Details were gathered.
Then came August 13th and the Campbell River City Council meeting.
Mayor Kermit Dahl placed a motion before Council to approve a $10,000 grant to the Campbell River Seniors’ Centre to assist with the replacement of our commercial dishwasher.
There was discussion with Council.
And then … the motion passed unanimously. (Thank you all.)
To say we were ecstatic when we received that news is not an exaggeration.
It is difficult to describe the weight that was lifted from our shoulders.
Mayor Dahl’s motion did more than provide financial assistance. In his words and in his recognition of what the Seniors’ Centre means to our community, he reminded all of us why we volunteer and why this Centre exists.
Mayor and Council recognized the important role our Seniors’ Centre plays in:
- Providing affordable, nutritious meals
- Reducing social isolation
- Creating community connection and belonging
- Supporting seniors living on fixed incomes
- Providing programs, classes and activities
Council also recognized the City’s previous contribution toward the kitchen renovation nearly 10 years ago.
Mayor Dahl specifically encouraged Council members to visit the Seniors’ Centre and see firsthand the programs and activities taking place there.
And importantly, he emphasized that this grant would allow the Seniors’ Centre to replace the dishwasher without having to take all of those dollars from our general operating funds. He stated that those funds are much better spent supporting the programs, activities and services that benefit seniors in our community.
We hope our members, supporters and followers have read our story right to the end because we want you to know this story as well as just how deeply grateful we are.
To Mayor Kermit Dahl and Campbell River City Council, to City staff, and to the taxpayers of our community who make this kind of support possible, we extend our deepest and most sincere gratitude.
Thank you for recognizing the value of what we do.
Thank you for recognizing the needs of seniors.
Thank you for helping us keep our Centre moving forward.
And, quite simply…
We love you all.
Dear Members & Past Members,
It is with profound sadness that we share the news of the passing of our President, Georgia Munro, on late Thursday evening, July 23, 2026.
Georgia devoted herself wholeheartedly to the Campbell River Seniors’ Centre and to the members she cared so deeply about. Through her kindness, dedication, and unwavering commitment, she touched the lives of many and built lasting friendships within our Centre. Her leadership, generosity, and warm spirit will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Georgia’s passing leaves a tremendous void in our Seniors’ Centre family, and she will be deeply missed.
On behalf of the Board of Directors, volunteers, staff and members of the Campbell River Seniors’ Centre, we extend our heartfelt condolences to her beloved children, grandchildren, family, and friends during this difficult time.
We will share information regarding any memorial arrangements that may be made, as it becomes available.
With deepest sympathy,
The Board of Directors
Campbell River Seniors’ Centre
